When is it OK to burn a music CD for a friend? Add Answer

A friend of mine and I have been talking about the ethical lines involved in sharing copyrighted music. The Recording Industry Association of America has a simple answer to the question: Never. I think most of us see gray areas.

Mixes are always okay!

Leader! Most 1st Place Votes
People made mixes for friends before Cds, much less internet bandits existed. I think most artists see this as promotion...not theft.

Burning CD's takes $ out of the musician's pocket always.

If the musician has the money to give away his CD's for promo's, then he knows how much his budget can give. When people buy one CD, and share it, they are stealing from his livelihood. It costs him so much money to record, master and mix, and make the CD's, and he needs to make the sales to break even and... [show more]

Never full albums, just individual tracks on a mix CD

I see this as a reasonable way to share interests and to encourage friends to buy albums by the artists they discover on my mixes.
